TNI 6.4: a new SSH scanner for Unix-based systems

Greetings!

We’ve just rolled out a major internal upgrade for scanning Linux, FreeBSD, and ESXi systems via SSH. While SSH-based scanning has been part of Total Network Inventory for a long time, the old agent was showing its age — becoming less reliable and harder to maintain as new Unix distributions kept emerging.

With this update, we’re introducing a completely rewritten SSH scanning agent. The new version is designed to be more stable, predictable, and much easier to extend. That means better support right now — and quicker support for more Unix-like systems in the future.

If you’re using a less common distribution and still run into issues, let us know! We’re actively expanding compatibility and your feedback helps us prioritize what comes next.

Full list of updates:

  • ImprovedCompletely redesigned scanning mechanism for Linux, FreeBSD, and ESXi devices via SSH protocol.
  • ImprovedSupport for Windows Server 2025.
  • ImprovedImproved onboarding process for new databases and creation of the first TNI storage.
  • ImprovedUpdated links to the online documentation.
  • FixedIssue with renaming and deleting storages in the database storages management window.
  • FixedSaving changes to IP addresses in the properties of devices with static IPs.
  • FixedIssue that prevented loading table report templates in certain cases.
  • FixedFixed display of FreeBSD OS names in reports.
Other improvements and fixes.

This is just the beginning. Thanks to this upgrade, we’re now laying the groundwork for future improvements — including resident agent functionality for Unix platforms, similar to what you’ve already seen on Windows.

Stay tuned!
